I have delayed writing about my trip long enough. Partly because I felt overwhelmed trying to decide what to talk about and partly because I wanted to get my film back and see what I captured (answer: lots of light leaks). So here are some thoughts on the beginning of my trip. Ill post some more tomorrow. Also, I have some LA pics posted on flickr. There are a few more of those to come, too.

Part 1:

First Night: On my first night in LA we went to The Greek Theater to see Sigur Ros. Ill admit that Im not terribly familiar with their work but it was enjoyable nonetheless. It was a beautiful, pot smoke filled night and the band knows how to utilize confetti so I have to give them credit for that. Maybe it was due to the second hand high I received from all the pot being smoked around me or maybe it was because I was so tired, but the crowd seemed remarkably polite compared to the other shows Ive gone to lately. Or maybe Icelandic bands just draw a higher class of people..

Day 1: We got an early start due to the fact John had to work for a few hours in the morning. That allowed me to roam around a couple blocks of downtown by myself. I spent most of my time in the mausoleum of a cathedral futilely snapping away on Meg, her advancing clicks waking the dead Im sure. Regretfully, I didnt have my digital camera with me so I cant properly share how lovely all the stain glass windows were. At the cathedral I was also able to see my first saintly relic! In the afternoon we went on The Lame WB Tour (not the official title). My expectations werent high and Johns were practically non-exsitant and I think it landed somewhere nicely in the middle. Perhaps if we had a flamboyantly enthralling tour guide things might have been different, but alas, we did not find ourselves so lucky. We got a dry as toast low talker who I am sure moved to LA in hopes of making it as a stand up comic. Throughout most of the tour I found myself thinking about his lonely life: a mattress on the floor in the corner of his studio apartment, his childhood poster of Steve Martin hanging on the wall above it, a hot plate, a TV, a recliner, and a single nail in the wall where he proudly hangs his WB uniform from a wire hanger at the end of every hard day. It was all very sad, really. Poor lonely Tour Guide. (If there could have been one bit of advice I would have given him to would be to know your audience. I find it very hard to believe that WB tour coordinators place the showing of a few trailers in a parking lot and then giving a brief history of the company that makes them Star Waggons on the must see list.)

So what I remember of the tour is lots of pointing out of houses and rattling off the numerous TV shows it has appeared in. I also remember lots of getting out of the tram, taking a few steps, him telling us something and everyone responding with a quiet, . About half way through I decided the lameness of the tour would have to be its own reward.

When given the chance to stand in front of a green screen and get our picture taken in front of some Harry Potter train, John and I declined (re good. Really.) But damn if it didnt mean a lot to Tour Guide: Are you sure? Dont you want something to post on myspace or facebook? Its free. Ok, fine. Whats my motivation? Youve worn us down by hitting our social networking nerve and telling us its free (as long as you dont consider the price of admission, then it cost $45. Actually times that by two and add parking and it cost $95.) If I had known that there was going to be even an ounce of audience participation, I never would have wanted to go. Later we were pressured to take a seat on the couch as well. Everybody else looked happy to be doing it so why not us.

The last 15 minutes were the best. It was the only part I actually found interesting. We went to a small museum where there were about 30 costumes from a variety of films Cool Hand Luke, The Assassination of Jesse James, The Departed, Casablanca, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The Dark Knight. THAT was cool. And there was some Harry Potter stuff upstairs that I never made it to because I spent most of my time drooling over Willy Wonkas purple coat and top hat.

Aside from that, there are two things that stand out the most regarding the tour: (a) As we drove past an empty basketball court, Tour Guide relayed stories of seeing things like Clint Eastwood playing ball with George Clooney. We saw nothing but an empty court, but I have found myself thinking of that possibility so much its almost like I did see it Clint is wearing a gray t-shirt and dark green shorts. Clooney is in a red shirt and black shorts with a white stripe down the side. And (b) Tour Guide talked about how a few weeks ago Gary Oldman was one of his guests on the tour. I dont really believe that although Gary Oldman is a rather obscure person to be lying about. But if it is true, I cant help but wish I could ask Mr. Oldman if he thought the tour sucked as much as I did. At least I will have a talking point if I ever meet the man in the future.

The day ended with a brief but ever so rewarding trip to Hollywood and Highland. What a vile cesspool! What a depraved collection of humanity! I kept looking for the decontamination showers but they didnt seem to exist. All I could think about was the amount of anti-bacteria wipes they must use to prepare that place for the Oscars. It must be washed in a sea of Purell. But regardless of vast amount of grime I encountered, one of the highlights of the trip happened in the mist of it all. Yes, Im talking about my encounter with Superman, the Superman from Confessions of a Superhero. Actually, there isnt much to say about the meeting itself besides the fact I went up and asked if I could get my picture taken with him and he said, Of course, but you do know we work for tips. (Chyeah. Duh. Ive seen the movie. I know how it works, Superman. Batman will beat the crap out of you if you dont pay.) I knew the photo would impress many (at least 3) in my inner circle and that was the entire reason I wanted to go to Hollywood. Mission accomplished. Rarely do I so easily obtain goals that I set for myself. But what was unexpected and perhaps even more rewarding was the amount of shame that John had to endure just by taking the picture just by having to acknowledge, if only for a minute, that he knows someone willing to pay to have their picture taken with a pretend, delusion superhero. The look of embarrassment on his face was the real reward. And me having to ride a rollercoaster would be his payback..

These days I feel absolutely fatigued, exasperated and at the same time relieved (does any of these make any sense?) Fatigued because I've not been sleeping enough, averaging about 5 hours a day on weekdays, which is way too little for me. Exasperated because the holidays are coming to an end in less than a week's time and I'm still reeling from the shock that 3 months feels more like 3 weeks. Yet relieved because I realised finally that I prefer studying more than working. This comes as a revelation because I've boasted for many years that I would prefer working. But as it dawned on me that I would be graduating in 2 years time, this idea became cease to become appealing to me somehow.

I didn't fulfil my goal of reading 15 books this time round like I always promised myself every holiday, but I'm still glad that many things came to a proper close. First being the issues I had with my second sister. it's all a little weird because although we share a room and we talk very often, the misunderstanding was cleared through an exchange of emails. Now thinking about it, it may not be so weird after all, because we are rather emotional people and trashing things out face-to-face would prove to be the most disadvantageous. Moreover, I think I express myself better through writing, it being my forte. Second being that I finally completed my job assignment! I can't imagine that I could feel so tired-out by a holiday job and I'm really looking forward to school (in a week's time, yeah!). Though I can't describe this job experience as fun or enjoyable, I'm glad I met some great/nice (cliche but I can't find other words to best describe them) people. I sure hope I can remain in contact with them.

Yesterday I met ya-ya for a chat and I was lamenting to her about the state of human relations, telling her about the golden days of writing snail-mail to friends, talking for hours on the phone with people etc and I don't know why this sudden poignant feeling struck me. For once I really hope my life plays out like a film, like Harry meets Sally, or Lakehouse etc...where people share more than instant chemistry and people long for each other in an unsuperficial manner. Where people bother to talk and know people instead of asking people to on their webcams when they haven't even met you in real person yet; or calling you "sweetie", "hot", "babe" etc based on some photo you post on Facebook which looks mighty fine to them (do not be quick to judge bacause who posts ugly photos of themselves online anyway??!!).
