STUDENTIA is not literary. In this day and time, when everybody — particularly every young woman body — writes, she says that the really distinguished thing to do is not to write, and she does not.

Technically, Atlanta director Tyler Perry had the evening off Saturday night as he introduced thousands of formally attired guests to the new 30-acre Tyler Perry Studios facility in southwest Atlanta.

But from the grand opening fireworks to the strains of Amazing Grace, the directors trademark flourishes were everywhere as Hollywood legends Sidney Poitier, Cicely Tyson, Ruby Dee and Louis Gossett Jr. gathered with Oprah Winfrey, Hank and Billye Aaron, Andrew and Carolyn Young, Will Smith, Barry Bonds and others to celebrate the first major television and movie studio owned and run by an African-American film producer.

I never dreamed I would witness this in my lifetime, Tyson, an Oscar nominee for , reflected on the red carpet. What Ive been able to achieve in my career is minuscule in comparison to this.

Posing for pictures on the red carpet with the studios owner, Oscar-winner Poitier told the crowd: ve spent 56 years in this business, and tonight is the reward. To see the people who have followed me and to see the success of the extent of this man is a real gift.

Inside, Perry had a surprise waiting for Poitier, Tyson and Dee. On the movie lots Main Street, just past East 34th Street and the Luminesce Light and Lamp Shop, banners unfurled down the fake brownstones to reveal the Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee Stage Three, the Cicely Tyson Stage Two and the Sidney Poitier Stage One.

In front of a cheering crowd, Poitier was overcome with emotion as his likeness unspooled in front of him. He majestically pointed his index finger at the applauding crowd and smashed a bottle of bubbly on the wall to christen it. Champagne sparkled on his black tuxedo jacket as he wiped the tears from his eyes with a handkerchief.

Across the way, a large pond was lit in gold light as a screen appeared in the water to reveal a film hosted by Perry, explaining how he found the abandoned former airline reservations center two years ago.

Organizer Teri Brown-Jackson was protesting the alleged firing of four Guild writers who had worked on episodes of Perrys TBS sitcom of Tyler Perrys House of Payne after negotiations for a contract broke down.

He said he was going to work out details with us. Then, all of a sudden, his executive producers tell us that they dont like the show and they want to go in a different direction. Weve written 17 of the 25 episodes this season. And with nine episodes left, they fired all of us, Brown-Jackson said.

A Perry spokesman previously said four of the shows seven writers were let go.

The writers were pushing the idea of unionizing writers so they could get health and pension benefits. Brown-Jackson said she worked on the show three years without those benefits.

Our concern is even if he hires some other Atlanta writers. Its still going to be a nonunion show. Were working for the good of all his Atlanta writers from here to come. Hes made over $3 million and we cant get health care, Brown-Jackson said.

Unlike other periods that saw precipitous drops, this one is rooted in foundering credit markets. That makes predictions more difficult than if the plunge were based on company profits or stocks alone.
When you have an environment like this where the crisis is so deeply rooted from the credit standpoint, it adds an extra layer of ambiguity and ultimately of uncertainty, said Mark Freeman, portfolio manager for Westwood Holdings Group Inc. That is what the markets are struggling with.
No turnaround is seen before 2009 or later. And there is a wide divergence of opinion on the future of this bear market, which feels unlike any other because of the $700 billion federal bailout and the collapse of investment banks.
Even with the Federal Reserve and other major central banks around the world slashing interest rates Wednesday, experts were hesitant to call a bottom.
Technical indicators tell us that were overdue for at least a short-term bounce, said Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist for San Francisco-based brokerage Charles Schwab Corp. That doesnt tell us that the bear market is necessarily over.

I had never been to Poland before, so I kicked off my first time in the country with a traditional Polish wedding. What better way!
Her family is as lovely as she is. And there are a lot of them! She has all sorts of cousins and brothers and aunties and uncles. Asia also has a quite a few good girlfriends from high school who came out for the wedding, including one from New York.
The day itself is set up a little differently from an American wedding. I was chatting with Tomek (one of many men named Tomek this weekend), her fiance, before I left her parents house for my hair appointment and he explained what would happen before the Mass. He and Asia would meet at the house, dressed for the wedding to receive the blessing from both sets of parents. Then they would take photographs for a couple of hours and then they would head for the church. They were getting married at the town Cathedral. Apparently, this was a busy day for weddings because as one wedding Mass ended with the couple walking out of the Church, the next group of guests were filing in. There is no bride or groom side of the church and in fact, Tomek sat in the left hand seat and Asia on the right. The parents come in and sit with no fanfare or escort and then the bride and groom walk down the aisle together.
After the Mass, in which the bride does not get kissed by the groom, the couple receives everyones best wishes, gifts and flowers outside the Church. Many of us then boarded a bus and we were shuttled to the restaurant for the reception. The tables were long and groaning under the weight of platters of food and bottles of soda, juice, wine and vodka. We started off with a champagne toast to the couple and then even more food started appearing. There were five hot courses served throughout the night. Asias aunts and cousins had baked some fabulous cakes and pastries that were on a separate, help yourself table along with coffee, tea and fresh fruit. In addition to the drinks on the dinner table, there was more alcohol by the coffee and an open bar. And there was wedding cake. No one was going home hungry.
Periodically throughout the evening, everyone would sing the couple a song wishing them at least 100 years of happiness. And then we would all drink. Sips are perfectly acceptable (rather than the whole shot of vodka), a concept I wholeheartedly embraced as the restrooms were down a flight of stairs. Going down stairs are not my strong point at any time.
The band was fantastic. They were a little more jazz oriented in style than rock, and it really suited the evening. Everyone danced. A lot. I, Iwona, at whose house I was staying, and another couple who were also staying there called it a night at 3am. Asia said she got to bed at 6.30 am. I cannot imagine what I would be like if I had stayed out until then.
I am so glad that I could be there to celebrate Asia and Tomeks wedding. And I cant wait to visit Poland again!

Sidenote, skip if youre not Catholic: Receiving Holy Communion in the Polish Catholic church was a very different experience. As an American (and given the lines here in Geneva and other places Ive been), I am taught that if I have committed a mortal sin, I cannot receive the Eucharist until I have been to Confession. But venial sins are themselves forgiven by the Eucharist. In Poland, you must have gone to Confession in order to receive the Eucharist. Out of a hundred or so people in the Church, I would say maybe twenty received Communion. And how you do it is totally different from the way Ive seen it anywhere else. Asias cousin, Iwona (who was my absolute savior in terms of cultural explanations and translations) asked if I wanted to receive Communion. I said, yes. I followed her and we crossed to the other side of the aisle and knelt on the floor. The priest came along and gave us the Host on our tongues. No hands allowed. I have never received Communion like that before. (okay, Ive done the no hands version, but kneeling? an uusi kokemus) And then I realized that this was not a whole group experience and I was mortified that I had committed a huge cultural faux pas, but where I come from, as long as youre not in a state of mortal sin, you dont pass up an opportunity to take Communion.

Warren Buffetts Investment in Goldman Sachs

Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, continues to use
his firms enormous cash reserves to make purchases into
some of the most valued, but down trodden, American
companies. Buffett declared another deal this week, the
first week of October, 2008: Hes purchasing $5 billion
worth of perpetual preferred stock in Goldman Sachs
(NYSE:GS), plus an option to buy at a greatly discounted
rate for the next 5 years.(. Buffett will get a 10%
dividend and the stock is callable after three years at a
10% premium. As arguably the worlds greatest living
investor, Buffetts investment moves are always watched by
the public and news media. When Buffett invests in a firm,
like Goldman Sachs, its a very valuable endorsement. This
time its an endorsement of not only this company but the
free market system.

To determine why Buffett found this a good investment, I
looked at many criteria as found in the book Buffettology,
written by Buffetts former daughter-in-law, Mary Buffett
and the website validea.com. Given Buffetts new investment
in Goldman Sachs, I thought it would be worthwhile to look
in detail at the common stock.

GS earns high marks based on my Buffett strategy, earning a
score of 79% out of 100%. Lets look at what the Buffett
strategy likes about Goldman Sachs to shed some insight
into one way Buffett may have looked at this investment.
First off, Goldman Sachs is a large global bank holding
company that engages in investment banking, securities and
investment management. Goldman Sachs was founded in 1868,
and is headquartered in the Lower Manhattan area of New
York City at 85 Broad Street.[1] Goldman Sachs has offices
in most major world financial centers. The firm acts as a
financial advisor and money manager for corporations,
governments, and wealthy families around the world. Goldman
offers its clients mergers acquisitions advice,
underwriting services, asset management, and engages in
proprietary trading, and private equity deals. It is a
primary dealer in the U.S. Treasury securities market.

Thats the qualitative side of it. Now lets look at the
quantitative side, which is where my Buffett model comes
into play. GS has the steady, reliable earnings history
that Buffett likes to see. Buffett likes companies to have
solid, stable earnings that are continually expanding. This
allows him to accurately predict future earnings. Annual
earnings per share from earliest to most recent were 5.67,
5.57, 6.00, 4.26, 4.03, 5.87, 8.92, 11.21, 19.69, 24.73.
Buffett would consider GSs earnings predictable, although
earnings have declined 3 time(s) in the past seven years,
with the most recent decline 6 years ago. The dips have
totaled 36.2%. GSs long term historical EPS growth rate is
14.4%, based on the 10 year average EPS growth rate.

Consistent profitability is not enough. In addition,
Buffett likes to see a high return on equity (ROE). Over
the past 10 years, GS has an average annual ROE of 19.3%.
Thats plenty good for meeting this models 15% minimum
requirement. The ROE for the last 10 years, from earliest
to latest, is 37.7%, 24.3%, 17.5%, 11.1%, 10.0%, 12.8%,
17.1%, 17.5%, 22.7%, 22.6%, and the average ROE over the
last 3 years is 20.9%, thus passing this criterion. GSs
management has proved it can earn shareholders 21.4% return
on the earnings they kept. This return is more than
acceptable to Buffett. Essentially, management is doing a
great job putting the retained earnings to work.

Share buybacks are also important and GSs total shares
outstanding have fallen over the last five years, although
the half-billion share secondary offering on Thursday will
no doubt alter that trend.

So, for the most part, the firm gets high scores on a
fundamental basis, but there are two measures where it
falls short. One is the Capital expenditures and another is
return on assets. Both are likely to improve and Buffett
has required key management to hold their shares during the
time Buffett remains invested. A

fter the business analysis is done, he then moves onto the
question, Is the price right? Consider this: GSs stock
is currently at 128, down from a high of 225 a year ago. We
know that Buffett wants to invest when others are most
and at a price that gives him a reasonably good
chance at making a profit over the long run.

Buffett gets a great deal with these preferred shares, but
I think long-term investors may be presented with a
wonderful buying opportunity here in the common shares as
well. While this is a favorable piece on GS, it is more
about providing you with insight into how to evaluate
stocks for your own investment success.

I tried google and sims2wiki before posting, so I understand that your sims can tan if you have Seasons and/or BV if they are outside a lot. I also know that there are cheats for giving a sim a tan and that probably there's a mod out there to get rid of tans by making them invisible (after all, I already have an invisible vampire skin to prevent skintones changing when sims become vampires).

But I'm unclear on some things:

1. If you only have BV, not Seasons, will your sims get tan only from sunbathing or will they also get it from simply doing outdoor activities/being outside? I assume it is the former; one of my sims makes sandcastles constantly but has yet to get a tan, while another sunbathed for only a few hours and did get a tan.

2. How long does a tan last naturally, and does this vary from sim to sim or from skintone to skintone? I'm sure there's a cheat to remove it, but unless tans last for an extremely long time, I would prefer to see it come and go naturally. It's been two days in game and my sim is still tan. Er. Unless, perhaps I forgot what he looked like untanned. ^^;

I've only recently added BV so I haven't had time to try everything yet. I have Uni, Nightlife, OfB and BV.

The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled on Friday that same-sex couples have the right to marry, reversing a lower court decision that had concluded that the civil unions legalized in the state three years ago had offered the same rights and benefits as marriage.

With the 4-to-3 ruling, Connecticut becomes the third state in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage. California legalized gay marriage in May 2008, and Massachusetts in 2004.

Today is really a great day for equality in Connecticut, said Bennett Klein, senior lawyer at Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, which argued the case before the Supreme Court. s decision really fulfills the hopes and dreams of gay and lesbian couples in Connecticut to live as full and equal citizens.

In his majority opinion, Justice Richard N. Palmer wrote that the court found that the segregation of heterosexual and homosexual couples into separate institutions constitutes a cognizable harm, in light of the history of pernicious discrimination faced by gay men and lesbians, and because the institution of marriage carries with it a status and significance that the newly created classification of civil unions does not embody.

The court also found that the state had failed to provide sufficient justification for excluding same-sex couples from the institution of marriage.

In 2005, the Connecticut Legislature passed civil union legislation, but the eight gay and lesbian couples who were plaintiffs in the case that was decided on Friday argued that the civil union law had created an unequal status for gay men and lesbians and did not confer upon them the same rights and protections as marriage.

While the Connecticut civil union law states that parties to a civil union have all the same benefits, protections and responsibilities under law that are granted to spouses in a marriage, it also included a clause that defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

With the ruling, Connecticut joins Massachusetts and California as the only states that allow same-sex couples to marry. Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and New Jersey have civil unions, while Maine, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii have domestic partnership laws that allow same-sex couples to receive some of the same benefits granted to those in civil unions.

The high courts of New York, New Jersey and Washington have ruled that there is no right to same-sex marriage under their constitutions.

Of the eight same-sex couples who were plaintiffs in the Connecticut case, Kerrigan, Elizabeth, et al., v. Connecticut Department of Health, et al., four of the couples had already entered same-sex civil unions, the others had been holding out for the marriage designation.

The case turned on whether same-sex couples should be treated as a suspect class groups like minorities and women that have experienced discrimination which could lead to heightened legal scrutiny of the decision to offer separate institutions.

In oral arguments before a Supreme Court panel, the assistant attorney general said the number of prominent politicians who are openly gay and lesbian proves that homosexuals are not politically powerless, one of the requirements of a suspect class; that caused one justice to say, If it were true political power, they would have already won the right to marry.

The frail-looking girl with sad blue eyes didn't speak a word of English. She had lived most of her 12 years in a Russian orphanage after being removed from her home and an abusive mother, according to an adoption agency file. And, the file said, she had epilepsy.

Yet when K gazed at the picture of the girl as it slowly loaded on her e-mail, she knew her destiny. The local teacher who longed to be a mom would travel thousands of miles to Siberia and spend nearly $30,000 to adopt Anastasia, nicknamed ''Nastia," and bring her home.

The road from Boston to Siberia and back again wasn't easy. K 40, had saved for five years and still needed financial help from her family for the eight-month adoption process, which required two trips to Russia.

But Nastia's arrival last May is just the beginning of the story. The newcomer kept speaking of a faint memory she had of an older sister. When K first met Nastia months earlier in Siberia, she thought the girl had merely dreamed and wished so hard for a sister to rescue her from the orphanage that she was confused. But on the day the adoption became official in a Siberian courtroom, Russian officials handed K records that indicated that Nastia did, indeed, have an older sister, named Anya, born in _. It did not, however, provide any information on her whereabouts.

Now K, well known in the region for teaching theater, is in the midst of a real-life international drama of her own. She hopes it will culminate with a reunion of the two sisters, who were separated when both were removed from their home about 12 years ago.K aims to adopt Anya, but the clock is ticking. US immigration laws mandate that petitions to adopt a former orphan's sibling be filed before that sibling turns 18. After that, Russian officials often don't grant exit visas, specialists said.

If Anya doesn't get out, ''her chance for any kind of normal life is zero," said K, who has started the paperwork and has been squirreling away cash.

But K is worried time will run out before she has amassed enough money, roughly $25,000, to complete the adoption process.

Life for Russian orphans can be grim, with many relegated to a lifelong underclass in their country and afforded few opportunities after leaving government care, according to a 1998 report by Human Rights Watch. Little has changed in Russian orphanages since the group's report, and prospects for young women who ''graduate" from the facilities remain especially bleak, said Diederik Lohman, a senior researcher at Human Rights Watch.

''What you see frequently are children coming out of orphanages who are unable to find jobs and turn to the street, and that obviously involves prostitution for young women," Lohman said. ''There is a lot of drug use and homelessness."

For K, getting Anya out has become pivotal. Just finding her was the stuff of high drama.
Shortly after Nastia's adoption, K scoured Internet chat rooms, trying to learn whether other parents managed to adopt Russian siblings. Through the kindness of strangers and the serendipity of cyberspace, K eventually found a private investigator who specializes in tracking down siblings of Russian orphans. K also connected with a woman in Virginia who had adopted a boy from the same Siberian orphanage where Nastia was raised. The woman offered to fund the detective's work, which has cost about $1,000, K said.

The investigator started by locating Nastia's and Anya's birth mother in a remote Siberian prison.

''There aren't even roads where she is,"K said. ''And there is no phone."

The woman said she thought Anya was in an orphanage known as Detsky Dom number six in Kemerovo, Siberia -- the same region where K attended court to finalize Nastia's adoption last May. K again scoured the Internet and found a phone number for that orphanage. On the day before Thanksgiving, Nastia dialed the number, but the news wasn't good. The person who answered said Detsky Dom number six had closed years ago.

''Nastia sobbed," K said.

Undeterred, K went back online and found a listing of all the orphanages in Kemerovo. There were about 20, K said. Nastia dialed, and on the very first try, the voice on the other end said yes, Anya lived there, but she was out. Call again, the voice instructed. A few hours later, around midnight on Thanksgiving Day, Nastia dialed back and Anya answered.

''The first thing she said to Anya on the phone is, 'I have a nice mother and she can be your mother, too,' " K said.

Since that call, the two sisters have spoken several times.

''I tell her people no punch her," said Nastia, now 13. She is still learning English but has already discovered that the scary American society she saw portrayed on Russian TV is not the life she now knows in Massachusetts. The little girl who once owned few clothes and shared shoes with other children in the orphanage now has her own Cinderella-themed room -- a sea of pink crammed with clothes, books, DVDs, a cellphone, a cat named Puck, and a sheltie, Henry.

''Anastasia is very lucky she got adopted. There are so many people who want to adopt young, healthy children, but with older kids, it's tough," said E, president of , the agency that K used to adopt Nastia.

E was happy to hear that the once-frail child Russian authorities diagnosed as having epilepsy has shown no signs of the disorder since her adoption. Russia can be ''very secretive" and its healthcare system very isolated, making it difficult to get reliable information about each child, E said.

Yet there are thousands of Russian orphans who remain in limbo as Russian nationalist politicians argue against international adoptions, fearing that the movement will drain the country of its future, said Lohman, the Human Rights Watch researcher.

''You have thousands of children who are completely abandoned, whom the state is not taking care of properly and who have a much better future if they could come to loving parents in the US," Lohman said. ''It's a bizarre kind of situation."

As the debate continues, one mom in Massachusetts is working feverishly to alter the course for one Russian orphan. A girl named Anya.
