For those of you who may have forgotten this little piece of history, the Keating Five was a political scandal, in which five U.S. senators were implicated in an influence-peddling scheme.

It was named for Charles Keating, who headed Lincoln Savings and who made $300,000 as political contributions to them in the 1980s.

Three of those senators – Alan Cranston (D-CA), Don Riegle (D-MI), and Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ) – found their political careers cut short as a result. Two others – John Glenn (D-OH) and John McCain (R-AZ) – were rebuked by the Senate Ethics Committee for exercising "poor judgment" for intervening with the federal regulators on behalf of Keating.

Yes that’s right, it was a banking scandal, where 23,000 mostly elderly investors lost their life savings, that lead the 1990-1991 economic recession and had a lot of parallels to the sub prime mortgage crisis currently hitting our country now.

Viktor Kozlov helped me a lot to get ready for the game against Carolina. I was so impressed with everything, even when we arrived at the airport and got out of the bus. There was the plane, no security checks, no customs. We got on board and sat in these huge seats that were like beds we could sleep in.

Yes, until Lokomotiv started taking care of it. And here we have all our sweaters cleaned and dried and placed in our lockers. Players don’t have to think about these things. You come in the next day and everything is ready for work. Everything is perfect, no blemishes. And that’s why the NHL is called the best league in the world. Everything is organized first class. Players are elite. That’s why everyone wants to play in the NHL, and I am no different.

I agree. I arrived in Washington on September 8th. There were no Russians here for the first three or four days. I panicked a little bit. I didn’t know what to do because my English is not that good. It was tough… But when Alex Ovechkin arrived it became so much easier.
Alex and his family treated me so well. Please thank him, his mother, his father and his brother through your newspaper. I can come to the Ovechkins’ house for dinner any time and will feel very welcome. I spent a lot of time at his house and no one [made me uncomfortable]. What do you think of your chances of remaining in Washington [with the first team]?
The competition is high within the team. And no one guaranteed me a spot. But my chances are 50/50. The coaching staff will make that decision. I think I will remain with the Capitals at least for a few days. And possibly I will play in a couple of preseason games. Maybe…
A lot will depend on how my groin will react. I will soon be back to full strength. But I don’t know if the coach will give me another chance.
My goal is to play in the NHL. I fight for that spot at every practice. I fight like I never have in my life. But if I am sent down to the farm club it won’t be the end of the world. I will keep working. And live my NHL dream.
Let’s take this as a milestone: the preseason game Washington will play against Philadelphia. It might be a great game.

At a hotel for now. How it happens here is: If you are set to stay with the first team, then someone from the coaching staff comes up and says: “Go get yourself an apartment in the city.” But no one has approached me yet . . .

Jesse Marsch carried his surfboard away from the water and through the sands of Manhattan Beach and gazed up at the homes of the beachside town. It was more than 10 years ago and Marsch dreamed about watching the sun set every night across the Pacific Ocean.
The Chivas USA midfielder retold this story last week from his home on The Strand, sitting on his patio, looking down at the water and beach.
The native Midwesterner has adjusted well to the South Bay lifestyle, welcoming visitors into his home while drinking a cup of coffee while wearing black sunglasses, dark plaid skater shorts and a pink designer T-shirt. Marsch and his wife, Kim, grew up in Racine, Wis. So far, they have no complaints about the ocean view from their house or the moderate weather that enabled them to take Emerson and their son, Maddux, who turned 3 last Monday, to Disneyland with Marsch's parents on Tuesday.
"It makes things a lot easier when you don't have to help the kids get on their snow pants and boots," Kim Marsch said.
The family almost never made it to California.
They were living in Wrigleyville, the Chicago neighborhood surrounding the Cubs' Wrigley Field, while Marsch played for the Chicago Fire. But the Fire told Marsch he wasn't part of their plan for the future. Marsch, who will turn 34 on Nov. 8, considered retirement.
Instead of making a snap decision, Marsch consulted with an old friend and coach, Bob Bradley, who recruited Marsch to Princeton University and coached him as a rookie at D.C. United and then from 1998 to 2002 in Chicago.
Marsch liked the idea of playing for Bradley again and couldn't turn down the chance to live in Southern California again. This time, it would be in one of those houses overlooking the ocean.
"I came out here a little early and researched it, looking at Westside Rentals and on Craigslist," Marsch said, retracing the steps so many people do to find a rental home by the beach. "And the woman we rent from is actually from Kenosha, Wis., which isn't far from Racine. And she took a liking to me."
Marsch has seemed to have a bit of a blessed time during his time in Southern California. When he spent the summer working on his senior thesis, friends helped him get a job bartending for a catering company, serving drinks to "Hollywood-type people," and living in Westwood.
He actually had a chance to work the Emmy Awards, but it didn't work out.

"I bartended the L.A. (PGA event) Open and if I had been here another week, I would have worked the Emmys but that meant calling Bob (Bradley) and telling him I'm going to be late for preseason camp. I didn't have the (guts) to do that."
Decision-making like that is why Bradley has such deep trust in Marsch. Bradley said that he could tell from the first time he saw Marsch play he knew Marsch "had a soccer brain and an idea of how to play."
Marsch has shown that knack all season for the Goats.

"My soccer career is rejuvenated," Marsch said. "Playing for Bob again feels right. On the field, I know what he wants and expects. He's done a fantastic job with this team. Before I got here, I thought, maybe I'll retire. Now, I'm thinking about one or two more years, maybe a little bit longer. Of course, you've got to look at it year-by-year at this point."
Kim said it took some adjusting, and was a little confused when people would ask where she was from.

"I thought do I look that different?" Kim said. "People would tell me they know I'm not from here because I'm too talkative, too nice."
Marsch is doing his best to fit in, though. He's got a surfboard in his bedroom and the ocean is just steps away.
Not that everyone is completely buying this transition from the Midwest to West Coast. Fellow midfielder Sacha Kljestan grew up in Huntington Beach and he's not convinced that Marsch has fit right in just yet, either.
"He tries to think he's SoCal with his shaggy hair," Kljestan said. "He's still got no style, but we love him anyway.

Carolina head coach Peter Laviolette made a point of complaining about his teams effort after Wednesday nights Canes loss at home to the Caps (4-1), so I was looking for a more inspired effort from the visitors last night. And it happened the Canes had a nice first period. But then it appeared as if during the first intermission the Jack Adams holder had a few choice words for his lethargic skaters, and thereafter the Caps pretty much had their way. I dont believe a great deal of value should be placed on back-to-back wins over a bitter division foe in the preseason, even in decisive fashion, but I also dont believe that the results should be altogether ignored.
A few more people than is customary for September hockey took in last nights game, but still, it was  largely a sea of purple at Verizon Center, in marked contrast to the last time when we were there, for a playoff game 7. It seems to me that the aim of these games should be (1) to avoid injuries; (2) to get a look at some young players in a more competitive environment than with a training facilitys intrasquad scrimmages; and (3) to introduce hockey to those in the region who know not of its existence. NHL exhibition games mean different things to different organizations. In Montreal and Toronto, of course, theyre sellout occasions. But in D.C., on a rainy night with an upset college football special airing on ESPN, and baseballs pennant race heated up, or on any September night for that matter, hockey just isnt going to be a hot seller even at discounted prices (season ticket holders were offered tickets to this months slate of home exhibitions at half price; still most of them remained home last night).

And yes, romantic, but not in a cheesy way. Instead, chesthurters. Right on, rich, full of complexity. The singer had a gorgeous range. The band was composed of three women (bass, drums, keys) and two men (guitars, vocals). They were all talented, and the whole band gelled well together. And I swear, they must’ve found the women on “America’s Next Top Model” — they were all beautiful lookers. No wonder the guys were feeling romantic.
Outside of The Blue Wisp, I talked with Ed Felson, part-owner of the bar. We chatted about the problem of having no foot traffic downtown when MidPoint or other festivals were not around. I won't write about her lack of experience--or her outrageous statements that she has more experience than Barack Obama, and her delusion that she deserves any of Hillary Clinton's 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling.
Although I would like to say something about her vicious attacks on community organizers, persons who sacrifice so much to help those with so little, I won't. That's for others to talk about.
