The problems? There are many, but it mostly lies with the acting and characters. In the Australian version, every character is a convincing loser, so much so it is cringeworthy. The characters and plot satirise the Australian subculture . This is a person of low socio-economic status with poor education, little opportunities in life or future prospects of success, residing in the outer metropolitan sprawl of major Australian cities.
Most problematic is the fact that there may not be a straight swap with an American subculture equivalent, and in order for this show to be successful and the dialogue funny, there has to be. Kath and Kim (US) seems to be lost with characters somewhere between rednecks, white trash and mall culture. Yet, perhaps they should have been more appropriately trailer trash. This confusing mixture simply dilutes the strength needed for the characters and plot. The stereotype being satirised is not black and white and Molly Shannon (Kath) of all people should know how important this is from her work on Saturday Night Live.
Granted, Kath is a tragic of sorts. Kim accuses her of being a loser magnet and her leotards suggest an 80s wannabe, but Kaths loser qualities, while spoken of, arent entirely clear in either her characterisation or the plot (at least in the pilot, anyway).
As in the Australian version, Kim is all too fond of stuffing her face with food. But while Gina Rileys Australian character of Kim is deliberately buxom and hopeless, Selma Blair places the American Kim as an attractive, good looking trophy wife. It just doesnt fit.
Selma Blair and Molly Shannons acting are both particularly mediocre. One can constantly see the actress behind the character and so all believability instantly goes out the window. You could argue you dont need an Emmy Award winning actress to pull this one off, but satire requires the actor to first be able to accurately imitate the person they are sending up, then exaggerate and enhance this for comic effect. Here, the US Kath and Kim fails miserably.
Is this a case of lost in translation? Partly yes, because the translation retains many of the concepts in the Australian Kath and Kim, such as Malcolm in the Middlesque inner monologue voice-overs, that seem to be grating with many American critics.
But the script has been heavily Americanised with identifiable places, people and events. So, why hasnt it worked? Put simply, the script is fairly lame.
To use a colloquialism, the Australian Kath and Kim has been so successful because it so accurately takes the piss out of so many elements of a local subculture. Before a word is spoken, the satire is evident in the opening credits, the clothes Kim wears daily and the completely out-of-fashion home furnishings on the set. It is this attention to details that is severely lacking in the American version.
While the ability to take the mickey out of the less appealing parts of your culture is not uniquely Australian, perhaps Aussies are more readily forgiving of embarrassing aspects of their daily lives and are happy to have a laugh at it, too.
If satire is going to work, it has to be amusing. Kath Kim (US) simply isnt funny. Satire has to be cruel and needs to offend in order to succeed, but the bite in this satire just isnt there. Its too tame.
Kath Kim (US) is cringeworthy alright, but sadly in all the wrong places and for all the wrong reasons. Variety Magazine hit the nail on the head claiming American audiences may well be wishing to say to it, but more than likely wont be able to say fast enough.

Riding my bike is a healthy, fun way for me to take in the people and sights of downtown Chicago. Parked in front of the Yukons was a marked Chicago Police Cruiser, which two obviously drunk white men mistook for a cab and tried to get into. It wasn’t so clean.
“If you guys want a ride, I’ll be happy to give you one,” the smiling officer, an affable, young black man told them. Times have changed.
�Wheres the VIP?’ I thought to myself. The light at the intersection turned red, which provided the perfect opportunity for me to gather the goings on.
As I waited, I received a text message from a friend telling me about a party later during the evening. “Dress chic,” she wrote. “It’s a sexy event.” *sigh* Isn’t everything that young, black professionals do sexy? Or grown? Or exclusive? Why does having a degree or two, a nice job, a car and a home mean that you one has to get dressed to the nines to go out and about? But here, as I often do, I digress.

I peeped that the convoy was next to Spiaggia, one of Chicago’s über upmarket eateries, but I’ve been there (I thought the food was disgusting and overpriced) and I’m hardly a dignitary, so maybe our location didn’t mean anything.
�Maybe it’s Jay-Z and Beyonce’,” I thought to myself only half jokingly.
One of the two men who exited the Yukon started speaking to someone, probably whoever was on the other end of the earpiece he was wearing. He pulled a sheet of paper from his inner jacket pocket, closed the door he was holding open and walked to the marked police cruiser. The officer started the car, as did the three Yukons.
Like clockwork, another agent occupied the position that the first agent left.
And then, coming out of the glass doors of Michigan and Oak was none other than Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle. I felt like a groupie.
“Barack,” I yelled, waving and smiling. “Barack! Keep fighting! We believe in you!” Looking somewhat bemused, he waved. Michelle, who was obviously chilly, kept her arms wrapped around herself with eyes straight.
Before seeing Barack stroll out of Spiaggia, where he was celebrating his wedding anniversary, I felt the same way about the word “swagger,” as I do about skinny jeans on men and the now ubiquitous, all-weather/occasion/gender scarves that everyone seems helpless to resist wearing.
But Obama’s swagger was undeniable. He looked more than presidential. He looked like power. Nothing about him clamored for attention, but there was no way to ignore him.
Win, lose or hijinks come November, Barack Hussein Obama is the man.

Well, I took a little vacation from blogging and then became engrossed in the political game unfolding these past two weeks. I did not want to blog about my views, interpretations etc., because very few from the competing side will agree and this blog is suppose to be fun to read. One item that I believe all women and bloggers may agree on is the treatment of our Presidential/Vice Presidential candidates by the media. Whether you supported Hillary or currently McCain, something is not right when we present strong, highly qualified women and all the media seems to talk about is there clothing, marriage or children. In particular, the media seems to focus on how bad of wife (Hillary--should have divorced Bill) or how poor of mother (Palin) tend to be. I have yet to hear any of Hillary's nor Palin's accomplishments presented. If you are adoring wife, we (the women of America) are dying to know why your husband loves you so much! Maybe the women in this country have brains and want to talk about qualifications and issues here!! Picking on a 17 year old child of a candidate is inexcusable and trashy US Magazine will never be purchased by our family again-mostly my daughters like this trash and that will give me even more of a reason. Sorry, don't get me started.

The news was announced in a posting on the BBC Internet Blog, by head of the BBCs online media group, Antony Rose.

A on one of Kevin Haydens posts at a blog called The American Street in which the cluelessness and ferocity of right-wing intolerance was vividly in evidence, brought together a number of things Ive been thinking about since I came South. Savannah is, in some ways, the epitome of the contradiction that still exists between what people say about racism and what they feel. There is a genuine sort of truce here where, at least on the surface, people accept each other at face value and try to deal with each other that way. But the truce doesnt affect any emotions that may be roiling beneath that surface. They remain as strong as they ever were, often for good reason.
The title above wasnt actually said by anyone but it encapsulates the feelings of an awful lot of white people I run into down here (not all, I hasten to say, and certainly not just in Savannah). Theres an impatience to get over it on the part of whites, who either dont know or dont accept that the realities of black life havent really changed since the 60s in many significant respects.В We feel the of forced integration and the social changes it has wrought in the last 40 years but have no real understanding of how superficial those changes have at the same time proved to be.
For example, yes, blacks dont sit at the back of the bus any more and they drink at the same fountains and sit in the same section of the movie theaters with whites and own homes and hold down jobs and are elected mayor and so on. To whites, this is a Big Deal. Many ofВ u8s experience such things as great sacrifices on our part and are justifiably proud of making them.В We honestly dont know what elseВ we can do and tend to fall back on the usual Right-wing folderol, personal responsibility. The society has made blacks equal to whites so if blacks arent scaling the social ladders, acting with grace and wit, and educated to within an inch of their lives, its not our fault. They need to take responsibility for their own failures now.
The corollary, of course, is that if blacks arent easing into white society with grace and wit, it just goes to prove what weve been saying about them for years: that theyre inherently inferior. What do you expect? people whispered to me when I got here. s a black town.
But under the cover of the superficial changes, even a cursory acquaintance with the black community in Savannah turns up lots of anger, residual and current, because to a large degree despite the overwhelming changes of the past 40 years, not much has actually changed: theyre still the last hired and the first fired, theyre still constantly badgered by police even though the police force has lots of black faces in it, some of them in positions of authority, and they are still given very little room to move compared to whites. A white teen who gets caught selling drugs will be sent to rehab; a black teen likewise caught will go to prison.
Even in tolerant Savannah, it is hard to find a black family in which no member has been to jail. It is still a constant part of their lives. You hear the DWB stories (police stop them for the crime of Driving While Black), the endless stories of being hassled just because youre walking in a white neighborhood, of being arrested for in the parking lot of the motel in which youre staying, and so on. Whenever the brothers get together, a basic staple of their conversation is who went to jail, who got out, who was accused of what, whose lawyer was good, whose wasnt, which cops treat you like a human and which treat you like an animal.
These are fundamental differences between the cultures, and the expectations of whites that letting blacks drink at the same water fountain is going to solve the whole problem is just a form of denial about how deep the problem really goes, and how hard it will be to fix it for real. Major portions of the society we accept will have to be reorganized, and though were doing that - slowly - we resent doing it at all and drag our feet, bitching and moaning about how we wouldnt have to do it at all if those damn blacks would just accept personal responsibility for the way they live.
But thats like saying that if those people from New Orleans had just accepted personal responsibility for Katrina the hiurricane never would have happened and they never would have lost their homes.
It isnt a surprise that white people feel that way, but it came as a surprise to me to find out that many blacks feel that way, too. Especially the women for some reason. They can be as hard as nails with their own, as unwilling to forgive as the most bigoted white you can conjure up. Only three times in all the miles I was hitching was I picked up by a black man even though most of the cars that passed me were driven by blacks. Of all the people whove offered me money, only two were black. They were both women and they each gave me a dollar.
With the first (in Richmond), I had the feeling that she was making a sacrifice, that even a dollar was going to cause a problem to her week but she was going to do it anyway. I was grateful and even humbled by that sacrifice. The other (in Fayetteville) was slumming. She had just put over $40 worth of gas in her SUV and she wanted to feel, perhaps, that she wasnt as selfish as she sometimes thought she was.
The point here is not that black people are stingier or meaner with money, gifts, or aid.
